Last spring, by the first weekend in April, the magnolias in town were in full bloom. This year, a late March cold snap has kept most of the magnolia buds well shrouded in their fuzzy jackets. Those buds that did break before the cold are now brown on the edges, permanently scarred by the freezing temperatures. In a short walk around campus, I was able to find some buds that look undamaged and promise to open in their full glory after a few days of April warmth.
