There's a little lie we northern gardeners tell ourselves in the middle of winter, a mantra we chant through frigid lips.We like the break that winter affords us, turning cold, snowy days into opportunities to assess past performance and dream of future blooms. When else would we have time to pour over garden catalogs?
But the second the air teases of spring, we cast our winter diversions aside and rush to see those first green tips breaking through the soil. We spend the winter craving spring, living for a future instead of being mindful in the present.
In the next few weeks, I'll be presenting at two garden photography workshops and there's one concept that I hope the participants take away from their time with me.
The garden always has something to offer, no matter the day on the calendar.
When we are mindful, we can leave our memories and dreams to the side and see the beauty of the present. Without expectations weighing her down, the garden shows us her details.
Today, I let my lens focus on the colors and textures of the garden roses. I think you'll agree that being mindful in the garden helps us to find beauty even on the cold, dreary days of winter.
