I always feel a little behind the times when it comes to Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day during the winter months. Aside from a couple of Spathiphyllum and a few poinsettias that haven't met their post-holiday demise, my indoor garden is usually devoid of blooms to celebrate as we approach the middle of another cold-weather month. So I decided to stretch the definition of my garden just a little this February and visited the University of Illinois Conservatory. This conservatory serves as my botanical home away from home, a place where I can disappear and pretend that the Midwestern winter is just a bad dream. Today, I closed my eyes and imagined myself a tropical garden where the air is warm and humid, the foliage is lush and green, and weeds come in the form of fragrant orchids. When they opened, this is what I found.
Phalaenopsis sp. (Orchid) |
Erauthemum puchellum (Blue Sage) |
Cymbidium sp. (Orchid) |
Oxalis regnellii |
Porphyrocoma pohliana |
Calliandra haematocephela (Powder Puff Tree) |
Clerodendrum quadrangula |
Neomarica nortiana (Walking Iris) |
Dendrobium 'Super Ise' |
Aechmea 'Red Ribbon' |
Cattleya sp. (Orchid) |
Cymbidium Taboo 'Black Imp' |
Camellia sp. |
