My mother-in-law has a knack for orchids. The touch. The right level of care and dedication. We gave her this Phalaenopsis orchid as a gift a couple of years ago, and it's blooming like crazy this year. When we visited last weekend, she had it prominently displayed in the living room. Instead of staking the flower scapes, she trained them into a natural arch.
The living room has a southwestern exposure, and in late afternoon is filled with the warm glow of the setting sun. The orchid flowers seemed to glow in the backlight; I knew they'd transfer well into a slightly warm black and white photo.
My in-laws are fans of older movies, and it struck me that the orchids in black and white hold a slight noir character about them. I can almost hear Lauren Bacall's breathy entreaty, "You know how to grow orchids; just put them in indirect light and humidity and grow."
