A few days ago, a friend was lamenting her embarrassment over her inability to find time to tend to her garden. I could instantly relate, as this spring has been a cyclone of work, scouts, sports, family, garden trips and friends -- leaving me feeling that same sense of inadequacy when it came to my list of things to do in the garden. In an effort to bring a positive to the conversation, I simply replied, "The garden will be there when you are ready for it."
Her response: "Indeed."
Over the last few weeks, in between the scheduled events on my calendar, I've been filling pots here and there, putting a few new perennials in the ground, and pulling what seems to be a bumper crop of thistle, nightshade and silver maple seedlings. Last night and this morning, I found time to get the last of the annual containers planted, mulch spread and overgrown shrubs pruned.
As the calendar is about to turn to July, the garden hadn't turned away in neglected spite. It was indeed there when I was ready for it.
