About five weeks ago, I wrote about the rainbow garden that my son and I planted. And although the rainbow hasn't materialized quite as we expected (due to voracious rabbits who ate our spillers -- the green Fiber Optic Grass and blue Torenia), the effort wasn't all for naught. The container has become less rainbow and more sun ray on account of the incredible performance of Melampodium 'Showstar', a 14-16 inch thick mass of foliage covered with small daisy-like yellow flowers.
I've never grown Melampodium before, and only tried it on the suggestion of a fellow gardener. But I'll guarantee it a place in my future containers, and even think it would make a great accent plant tucked in a mixed border. Can't wait until next summer!
