Returning home from a short 4th of July holiday out of town, there are two new blooms in the garden.
The passionflower (Passiflora sp.) vine that I overwintered in a friend's sunroom has started to unfurl its first blossoms. The plant was ratty and infested with mealybugs when I brought it back to my garden this spring, so I but it back to several healthy stems. It has regrown beautifully and is starting to climb over an old bench in the southwest corner of the back perennial and shrub border. I was concerned that it wouldn't get enough sun in the dappled shade of the honeylocust, but it seems to be thriving as long as I remember to water it frequently.
The second new bloom is a Phlox sp. that was planted in the garden when we purchased the property a decade ago. I'm unsure of the variety, but it has survived several transplantings and now thrives in the afternoon sun of the western garage border. It forms a middle layer of the border against a background of two lilacs (Syringa vulgaris) and behind drifts of catmint (Nepeta sp.) and Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia sp.)
