Our slow, unfolding autumn continues here at Cherry Creek, as the hue of the garden slides away from summer brightness toward the earthiness of fall and winter. A few summer tropicals growing near the house foundation seem to shrug off the near-freezing nighttime temperatures, but most of the tender plants without the benefit of microclimates have given up the fight for survival. Each day, new color emerges in the trees, shrubs and perennials. Occasional dabs of blue and purple highlight a highly-textured palette of brown, maroon, gold and orange throughout the landscape.

I took an early-morning walk around the house, soon after the sun rose above the neighborhood roof lines to the East. A warm light gilded the garden, drawing an ethereal halo around many plants, sharpening the color in others. Please enjoy those that politely asked me to capture their beauty on this morning's walk through my garden.
