It's that time of the month once again, when gardeners around the blogosphere post photos of what's blooming in their gardens. Here's what's brightening up my landscape today.

The recent heat wave, which thankfully looks like it might be breaking this week, has put a lot of stress on the container annuals, but several species are strutting their stuff in mid-August.

Lobelia 'Blue Moon'

Lantana sp.

Salvia 'Victoria Blue'

Begonia sp.

Gomphrena 'QIS Mix' (Globe Amaranth)

 Petunia sp.

Melampodium 'Showstar'

Salvia 'Jedi Grape'

Antirrhinum majus 'Floral Showers Mix' (Snapdragon)

Impatiens sp.

Catharanthus roseus (Vinca)

Catharanthus roseus 'Extreme F1 Orchid' (Vinca)

The annuals aren't the only plants holding their own. Although the summer herbaceous perennials are showing signs of slowing down, there are still plenty in bloom.

Rudbeckia sp. (Black-Eyed Susan)

Heuchera 'Brownies' (Coral Bells)

Phlox paniculata (Garden Phlox)

Lobelia siphilitica (Giant Blue Lobelia)

Hosta sp.

Hosta sp.

Echinacea 'White Swan' (Coneflower)

Helenium 'Mardi Gras' (Sneezeweed)

Clematis 'Jackmanii'

Perovskia atriplicifolia 'Longin' (Russian Sage)

Leucanthemum x superbum 'Becky' (Shasta Daisy)

Several shrubs (including roses) are blooming, including the last gasp of Hydrangea and a surprise rebloom on Weigela.

Hibiscus syriacus (Rose of Sharon)

Rosa 'Knock Out'

Rosa 'Home Run'

Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle' (Smooth Hydrangea)

Rounding out this month's blooms are the ornamental grasses, tropical plants and crops.

Mandevilla sp.

Hibiscus sp.

Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' (Feather Reed Grass)

 Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Hameln' (Fountain Grass)

 Cotton

 Spearmint
