Some Like It Hot

We're about midway through our growing season, and the garden is starting to show signs of frustration with the abnormally high temperatures we've had so far this summer. The perennial beds sag by late afternoon, begging for a few drops of water. After a wet, hot June, this month has been bone dry -- so dry I was threatening to do a rain dance this morning. Perhaps I should have, as the storms that cropped up around the state failed to give us any precipitation.

There's one plant in the garden that is absolutely loving the dry heat we've had the past two weeks. It's the cotton I started from seed in early spring and transplanted in the garden in late May. For the first time since I planted it, I have real hopes of seeing the full cotton growing cycle in my Illinois garden.
