A couple of years ago a gardening friend gave me a division of Hemerocallis lilioasophodelus and encouraged me to plant it in the garden near our gazebo, where we could enjoy its scent in the evening. I'd never witnessed a night-blooming, much less a fragrant daylily, but I took his word for it and planted the small fan at the base of the honeylocust that rises above the gazebo.
This week, for the first time in my garden, his gift revealed itself. It's easy to see why it's commonly called a lemon lily, both in hue and scent. Its aroma is not overpowering, even up close and personal. Rather, it's reminiscent of how I've always wished a Stargazer lily would appeal to my olfactory senses.
Its beauty speaks for itself.
