As I walked through the garden tonight, one of my newest plants -- Alocasia Masquerade™ 'Mayan Mask' -- made me stop in my tracks. It glowed, the veins branching out from its arching stem outlined in darkened silhouette. The swirled texture of the leaf tissue appeared almost painted, broken by a constellation of blemishes and wear along its outer edge. Its name -- 'Mayan Mask' -- was betrayed by the light. Instead of being hidden behind false pretenses, it had nowhere to hide its imperfection.
The moment was not one of unattainable purity. What made me catch my breath was the beautiful resonance of its flaws.
