Changing of the Seasons at the Japan House Pond

One of my favorite spots in the Champaign-Urbana area is the pond adjacent to Japan House at the University of Illinois Arboretum. The curving lines of the pond's shoreline provide a wonderful sense of movement and the varieties of trees and shrubs that surround the pond provide full-season interest. I often sit on the peninsula that juts into the middle of the pond and wish I could visit every day to see the subtle changes of the seasons.

In the spring, the red buds of the maples are the first to emerge. Soon after, the white blossoms of the hawthorns and cherries in the foreground burst out.

In 2011, one of my goals is to visit this spot at least twice a month to create a photographic journal of the changes in the landscape, discovering the details of the flora and fauna of this little slice of the University of Illinois Arboretum.
