I sat down at our dining room table late this afternoon to write a blog post. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed the large orange ball of a sun quickly falling behind the neighboring houses. It seemed early for sunset until I realized that we're only three weeks away from the shortest day of the year. I'd passed on a potentially beautiful sunset earlier in the week, so I decided not to miss another chance.
The trick to a quality sunset photo out here in the flatlands is to find a point of reference -- a tree or building -- that gives the photo a sense of scale and perspective. The challenge for me is to drive quickly (and safely) enough to get the right point of reference at the right angle and distance before the light disappears. I have a few favorite locations, but tonight ventured down a new country road and pulled up alongside an old corn crib. I walked across the narrow road and backwards into a field, feeling my shoes sink into the freshly-tilled earth as I sought the right frame.
I started to shoot as the sun slipped below the horizon, disappearing into a hazy glow.
