Walking through the garden tonight for my early evening photo shoot, I noticed something shiny on the lilac growing on the northwest corner of the garage. It looked like a whitish silver insect, 1.5-2 inches long and slender with black spots. It seemed to be feeding on a tattered lilac leaf.
Upon closer inspection, I realized it was a roofing nail that had punctured the leaf. It must have fallen during the roofing project a few weeks ago and slowly worked its way through the leaf. The black spots were roofing tar.
The roofing crew was actually quite cognizant of the landscaping as they attacked the old shingles with garden forks and tossed them over the edge. If a torn lilac leaf is the only lasting reminder of their work, I shouldn't complain and just smile at the new metallic, lilac-eating insect in my garden.
